Alfredo Morales: United States return is 'will always be my goal'

Alfredo Morales is hoping to return to the United States national team after coming back from injury.
Alfredo Morales has made 13 appearances for the U.S. national side.

Ingolstadt midfielder Alfredo Morales is eyeing a return to the United States national side.

Morales, 26, missed the Copa America Centenario this summer because of injury, having been a regular starter at the beginning of the Bundesliga season.

This term, he has struggled for form and knee problems and failed to make the squad for five consecutive matches. However, Morales returned in Ingolstadt's 1-0 shock win against then leaders RB Leipzig, and later said that he was happy to return after "difficult weeks in the weight room."

Ahead of Ingolstadt's trip to Leverkusen on Sunday, Morales has told Bild that he now dreams of a return to the U.S. national side, for whom he won the last of his 13 caps in the 3-1 defeat of Puerto Rico in May 2016.

"Even though my first half of the season wasn't the biggest success: The national team was my goal and will always be my goal," he said.

The Berlin-born player was one of many players with German roots to debut under former head coach Jurgen Klinsmann, and Morales believes that U.S. soccer will continue to reap the fruits of Klinsmann's reign.

He said: "Football in America profited from the Klinsmann era, and will continue to do so in the future."
