Departing wonderkid Muhammad Shaban set to miss KCCA FC-Esperance

KCCA FC will be without striker Muhammad Shaban when they face Esperance in the CAF Champions League in Kampala on Saturday.

The Ugandan heavyweights are under pressure to secure a result after letting a two-goal lead slip to lose 3-2 in Tunisia in the first match between the two sides last week.

That defeat left them bottom of Group A, having taken three points from their opening three matches. Esperance, by contrast, sit atop the standings on seven.

KCCA's task will be made trickier due to the absence of wonderkid Shaban.

"Shaban is in the middle of a transfer to another big team in Africa, but I cannot reveal the details as you can only get it from the club chairman," coach Mike Mutebi told KweséESPN.

"He will not be part of the team for the Saturday game together with Jackson Nunda, who is injured," Mutebi added. "We do not want to disorganize Shaban so that the transfer is completed.

"It is always good when other top teams come to take your players, because it means we are doing good work nurturing talent."

There's been a significant exodus of talent from the Ugandan top flight in recent months, with the likes of Issac Muleme, Nicholas Wadada, Derrick Nsibambi and Allan Kateregga all leaving for foreign shores.

"We also had Muleme and Nsibambi join teams in North Africa, which shows that they have identified good talent in Uganda," the coach added.

Speaking to KweséESPN, Shaban confirmed that his switch to the professional game was imminent.

"I have been disorganized looking for my yellow fever card to enable me to travel," the youngster began. "I cannot tell you which team I am joining yet.

"I am very happy that we are in the late stages of the negotiations and my dream of becoming a professional player is about to be realized. I have been working hard, and scoring goals is what I love most."

The aggressive striker also scored the lone goal that saw KCCA FC eject Ethiopia's Saint George SC to qualify for the group stage of the Champions League, and also top scored at the COSAFA U-20 Championship in Zambia last year.
