Micho Sredojevic threatens Uganda over $54,000 debt

Former Uganda coach Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevic has warned the Ugandan federation to pay the debt they owe him or risk being sanctioned by FIFA.

Sredojevic guided Uganda to the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year after a near-four-decade absence from the continental showpiece, but terminated his contract with the Ugandan FA on July 28th citing non-payment of his outstanding arrears and bonuses.

In total, the Serbian coach claims that he's owed $54,000 by FUFA.

"Through my agent Ivica Stankovic we have written to the Uganda FA to effect this payment as quickly as possible," Sredojevic told KweséESPN. "They need to pay before the next 2018 World Cup qualifying tie or could risk expulsion from the qualifiers."

The Serbian, who rejoined PSL heavyweights Orlando Pirates last week, insisted that the entire fee he is owed was "purely deserved and properly earned."

Now under the tutelage of interim coaches Moses Basena and Fred Kajoba, the Cranes host Egypt in Kampala in World Cup qualifying on August 31st, before the return leg in Alexandria on September 5th.

FUFA CEO Edgar Suubi Watson doesn't appear to be taking Sredojevic's threat too seriously. "We do not know anything about the ultimatum Sredojevic is giving because I have not seen any letter like that," Watson told KweséESPN, "but we shall pay his debt when we get the money."

Besides guiding Uganda to the 2017 Afcon, Sredojevic also led the national team to the 2014 and 2016 Africa Nations Championships, and won the regional 2015 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup.

In 2015, FIFA expelled Zimbabwe from the 2018 World Cup qualifiers for failing to pay their former national team coach.

FIFA's disciplinary committee said it took the action as a result of the non-payment of an outstanding debt of $81,000 by Zimbabwe's football federation to coach Jose Claudinei Georgini. The Brazilian coach handled the team between January and November in 2008.
