World Cup hosts Russia squandered the lead to draw 1-1 with Turkey in Moscow on Tuesday, extending their winless streak to seven matches in their last friendly before the tournament kicks off next week.

Stanislav Cherchesov's side took the lead in the 36th minute as Spartak Moscow's Alexander Samedov effortlessly chipped Turkish goalkeeper Serkan Kirintili after Alan Dzagoev fed him a short pass in the box.

The goal was not enough, however, to give Russia a much-needed and morale-boosting win heading...

Turkey's Cenk Tosun sees red, makes throat-slit gesture towards fan

Cenk Tosun was sent off in a friendly.

Turkey's Cenk Tosun appeared to make a throat-slitting gesture towards a fan and had to be restrained by his teammates in a 2-2 draw with Tunisia in Geneva, Switzerland, on Friday.

Tosun, who joined Everton from Besiktas in January, had just scored a penalty to put his team ahead in the second half but Tunisia quickly equalised.

Five minutes later, the game was stopped when Tosun ran towards the sideline and pointed to the stand. He continued to shout into the crowd as teammates tried in vain to...

Euro 2024 bid chief: 'High time' for Turkey to host major tournament

Turkey

The head of the Turkish bid for the 2024 European Championships has said it is "high time" his country was given the chance to host a major event.

Having failed with three previous bids for the Euros and a campaign to host the 2020 Olympics, Turkey is up against a strong bid for the European tournament from Germany.

Speaking to reporters in London, Turkish Football Federation vice-president Servet Yardimci admitted losing to France by one vote in 2010 for the 2016 Euros was "upsetting" but it made...

Turkish fan hires crane to watch Denizlispor match

One intrepid Turkish fan conjured up an ingenious scheme to circumvent his stadium ban and watch his beloved Denizlispor side in action at the weekend.

Having been given a one-year ban from the Denizli Atatürk stadium for a previous misdemeanour, the chap in question went to the lengths of hiring a cherry-picker in order to "attend" his team's second-tier match against Gaziantepspor.

The crane was clearly visible over the perimeter wall as the lone fan cheered and chanted along with the rest...

Borussia Dortmund's Nuri Sahin accepted into Harvard Business School

Confounding the assertion that footballers are a little lacking in the intelligence department, Nuri Sahin has announced he's going off to college.

The Borussia Dortmund midfielder hasn't just been accepted into any old college either: we're talking about the prestigious Harvard Business School here.

"I'm pleased to inform you that I've been admitted to Harvard Business School," Sahin, 29, announced on social media. "Super excited about the programme and delighted to meet legendary [Professor]...
