Hosts Russia have harnessed World Cup momentum to defy expectations, galvanise a nation

Russia have defied the odds, winning each of their first two games handedly and scoring eight goals.

Stanislav Cherchesov is rarely lost for a laconic response and kept a straight face when asked, half an hour after Russia had all but booked their place in the last 16 of the World Cup with a 3-1 win over Egypt, whether this had been the happiest day of his life.

"I hope there are many more to come," Cherchesov responded plainly, before quickly moving on to the next question. Even if he was not willing to engage in hyperbole with the world's media, the lid on his emotions was not too tightly fixed....

The hosts Russia continue their fine World Cup form, Japan beat 10-man Colombia and Senegal become the first African nation to win at the 2018 World Cup.

Russia striker Artem Dzyuba says his side are "madly happy" after a second straight impressive performance at the 2018 World Cup on Tuesday.

The host nation virtually assured themselves a place in the knockout stage after a comfortable 3-1 victory over Egypt in St. Petersburg.

Dzyuba was on the scoresheet in the game and played a role in the opener when his pressure helped cause an Ahmed Fathi own goal.
