Russia's Giorgi Jikia doubt for World Cup after tearing ACL

Giorgi Jikia is a doubt to play for Russia in the World Cup.

Russia defender Giorgi Jikia tore his anterior cruciate ligament in a club friendly on Thursday and could be ruled out of the World Cup.

Jikia hurt his left knee while playing for Spartak Moscow against Chinese team Shanghai SIPG in the United Arab Emirates.

Video footage showed him clutching his knee and howling in pain, before being taken away on a stretcher.

Spartak said in a statement that Jikia has been released from hospital and is in the team hotel, but that he will require an operation.

FIFA reviews fresh evidence related to Russia doping case

Russia's national team could be so much better if their league was stronger.
Players from Russia's 2014 World Cup squad are among 34 football cases under suspicion.

FIFA has intensified the investigation into doping in Russian football, disclosing on Monday it has finally sought details from the chemist who exposed the scale of state-sponsored cheating across sports.

The Associated Press reported last month that Grigory Rodchenkov, the former Moscow and Sochi lab director, was still awaiting contact from FIFA to pursue intelligence on how soccer was tainted by the doping conspiracy.

Evidence and cooperation from Rodchenkov led to 34 suspicious football cases...

Russia's Vitaly Mutko formally relieved of World Cup committee duties

ESPN FC's Craig Burley does not feel Russia will emerge from Group A that also contains Saudi Arabia, Egypt or Uruguay.

Russia's deputy prime minister Vitaly Mutko has been formally removed as the chairman of the committee organising this summer's World Cup.

The document announcing his exit from the committee he has fronted since its creation in March 2011 -- three months after the bid he led won the right to stage the 2018 tournament -- was signed by Russian prime minister Dmitry Medvedev on Dec. 30 and published on Thursday.

It had already been announced that Mutko will be replaced as chairman of Russia 2018's organising...

FIFA not seeking whistleblower's Russia doping info, lawyer says

An employee of Russia's national drug-testing laboratory holds a vial in Moscow.

FIFA has made no attempt to contact Russian doping whistleblower Grigory Rodchenkov to gain information about "many" footballers embroiled in the widespread conspiracy by the 2018 World Cup host nation, according to his lawyer.

"Dr. Rodchenkov has information about Russian footballers being protected by the state sponsored doping system," lawyer Jim Walden told The Associated Press.

If FIFA thoroughly explores Rodchenkov's evidence it could sharpen the focus on doping in football and further undermine...

Vitaly Mutko temporarily steps down as president of Russian Football Union

Vitaly Mutko was banned by the International Olympic Committee.

Russian football chief Vitaly Mutko has announced he is temporarily stepping down from his post.

Mutko, the president of the Russian Football Union (RFU), is stepping aside for up to six months, reportedly to fight his ban from the Olympics for state-sponsored doping.

Mutko was banned for life by the International Olympic Committee last week over the Russian doping scandal.

"I have made a decision and informed the RFU executive board about it,'' Mutko said in quotes reported by Russian news agency...
