Philippines goalkeeper Neil Etheridge blazing a trail for South East Asia in the Premier League

Fans storm the pitch at Cardiff City Stadium as the Bluebirds end their four-year stay in the Championship and return to the Premier League.

When Cardiff City kick off their return to the Premier League at Bournemouth's Dean Court on Saturday afternoon, Neil Etheridge will be making history when he takes his position between the posts for Neil Warnock's side.

The 28-year-old Philippines goalkeeper will become the first player from South East Asia -- a region fanatical about English football -- to feature in the Premier League as England's top flight adds another nationality to its ever-growing list of international participants.

Terry Butcher steps down as Philippines coach without managing a game

HONG KONG -- Former England captain Terry Butcher has stepped down from his role as head coach of the Philippines national team without taking charge of a single game.

Butcher was named Thomas Dooley's replacement at the start of June and was due to lead the Philippines at the Asian Cup finals in January after the country secured qualification for the continental championship for the first time.

"I'm sorry to announce that I will not be proceeding in the role as head coach of the Philippines national...

Former England captain Terry Butcher appointed Philippines head coach

Former England skipper Terry Butcher has been named manager of the Philippines national team.

Former England captain Terry Butcher said becoming a national team coach was the "next step" in his career after being appointed as the head coach of Philippines national team on a two-year deal.

Butcher, who won 77 international caps and played in three World Cups, went on to manage eight clubs but did not hold any managerial position since getting the sack at Newport County in 2015.

"People asked me whether I'd fallen out of love with the game but it felt more like the game had fallen out of love...

Cardiff City keeper Neil Etheridge can inspire next generation of SEA footballers

Cardiff City's Neil Etheridge celebrates after a Championship win against Bolton.
Neil Etheridge could be a starting goalkeeper in the Premier League next season if Cardiff earn promotion.

Neil Etheridge has played in front of 90,000 roaring fans in Jakarta, but the Philippines No. 1 has an even bigger game on Sunday.

Cardiff City are 90 minutes away from the English Premier League, with three points at home against Reading enough to guarantee a return to the top flight they departed in 2014. And there will be plenty of fans in the Philippines hoping that the Bluebirds can do it.

"There is a lot of excitement," Chris Greatwich, Etheridge's former national teammate and head coach of...

Philippines rally to make history and qualify for first-ever Asian Cup

The Philippines, needing a point against Tajikistan to qualify for the Asian Cup, came back to win 2-1 in Manila.

The Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila is closer to downtown than most Asian stadiums. It is also small and almost falling apart, but it has a sense of history and it certainly witnessed something historic on Tuesday as the Philippines qualified for a first-ever Asian Cup, to be held in 2019.

It was as tense and as tight as the legendary traffic jams in the country's capital, but eventually the national team came from behind to defeat Tajikistan 2-1 and top Group F. It means that next January,...
