Singapore, Malaysia drop sharply in FIFA rankings after winless 2017

Singapore will hope to finish strong in the Asian Cup qualifiers following quite a disappointing 2017 campaign.

After a winless 2017, Singapore and Malaysia fell a combined 15 spots in the latest FIFA rankings, to sit below Asian minnows like Laos and Chinese Taipei.

Singapore tumbled 11 places to 173rd, while Malaysia are just above them in 170th after sliding four rungs.

Both teams are in danger of failing to advance to the 2019 AFC Asian Cup after defeat-riddled qualifying campaigns so far.

Vietnam close to 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualification after Cambodia win

Vietnam supporters
Vietnam fans will be feeling confident of qualifying for the 2019 Asian Cup after another victory.

Vietnam are on the verge of qualifying for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup after they went joint top of Group B with a dominant 5-0 victory over Cambodia in Hanoi.

The result gave Park Hang-Seo the perfect platform from which to seal qualification for the continental championship when he takes over as head coach this week. Three points at home to Afghanistan next month would book their ticket to United Arab Emirates in Jan. 2019.

Akbar Nawas to fly Singapore flag as coach in first-foreign Cup final

Jason Dasey and Dez Corkhill assess the lack of intensity in the S. League which may be factoring in the national team.

Former Tampines Rovers coach Akbar Nawas will be Singapore's only representative in the 2017 Singapore Cup final after two foreign clubs won through to the domestic showcase match for the first time.

His Global-Cebu side, of Philippines, overcame Hougang United on Saturday night -- 2-1 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate -- to set up a date with holders Albirex Niigata (S), of Japan.

Overseas clubs were first allowed to participate in the Singapore Cup in 2003.

This is also a second successive Cup...

Philippe Aw, Akbar Nawas disagree as Hougang draw in Singapore Cup

Jason Dasey and John Wilkinson mull over the implications should the S.League take a one-year break in 2018.

They're two of Singapore's brightest young coaches, but Philippe Aw and Akbar Nawas disagreed about a penalty call that may decide which team goes through to the 2017 Singapore Cup final.

Aw's Hougang United drew 2-2 with Akbar's Philippines' side Global-Cebu FC in the first leg of the semifinals at Jalan Besar Stadium on Wednesday night. The second leg will be played at Hougang Stadium on Saturday.

But Aw believes that Hougang should have been awarded an added-time penalty that would have swung...

Singapore rise nine spots to go above Malaysia in FIFA world rankings

Jason Dasey and John Wilkinson break down Singapore and Malaysia's recent poor home outing in the Asian Cup.

Singapore are above Malaysia on the FIFA world rankings for the first time in more than a year after climbing nine spots.

This comes after the Lions secured consecutive 1-1 draws against Hong Kong and Turkmenistan in their most recent international matches in August and September.

Singapore are at 162nd, four spots above Malaysia, who remained at 166th, according to the latest list.

The Malaysians have failed to win four consecutive games since Portugal's Nelo Vingada took over as head coach in...
