New Zealand international Shane Smeltz confirms his retirement

Shane Smeltz sits second on the A-League's all-time record goal-scoring list with 92 goals.

Two-time A-League golden boot winner Shane Smeltz says his 18-year professional football career is over.

The 36-year-old -- who last played for Borneo FC in Indonesia -- earned 58 caps for the New Zealand between 2003 and 2017 and nabbed 24 goals.

He scored the goal in the All White's famous 1-1 draw with Italy at the 2010 World Cup.

An old-fashioned, predatory No. 9, German-born Gold Coast-raised Smeltz also played for clubs in Australia, England, Turkey and Malaysia.

He scored 24 goals in 51 Nix...

Colorado Rapids hire former New Zealand boss Anthony Hudson

Anthony Hudson is the new manager of the Colorado Rapids.

The Colorado Rapids officially announced the hiring of Anthony Hudson to be the team's new head coach on Wednesday after he signed a three-year contract.

Hudson, 36, was most recently the manager of the New Zealand national team, which was denied a spot in the World Cup after losing 2-0 on aggregate in a playoff against Peru earlier this month.

He resigned from his position with the All Whites last week after winning nine games with 11 defeats and seven draws.

At Colorado, he takes over for interim...

Anthony Hudson resigns from New Zealand amid Colorado Rapids links

Jefferson Farfan and Christian Ramos propelled Peru to the final spot at Russia 2018 with a 2-0 victory over New Zealand.

New Zealand head coach Anthony Hudson has resigned a week after his team's loss to Peru in an intercontinental World Cup qualifying playoff.

England-born Hudson, 36, announced his decision in a statement released Thursday by Football New Zealand which said a search for his replacement would begin immediately.

New Zealand won the Oceania World Cup qualifying series but lost to Peru in the intercontinental playoff, drawing 0-0 in the first leg in Wellington and losing the return leg 2-0 in Lima. Hudson...

New Zealand and Peru left to ponder tactics for World Cup playoff return

A Maori war dance, or haka, greeted Peru's players as they took to the field in Wellington.

As they took the field in Wellington for the first leg of their World Cup playoff, Peru's players were greeted with a Maori challenge. They looked on with studied indifference. But how would they deal with the test that New Zealand would provide?

The experience was on the New Zealanders side -- a Confederations Cup appearance in June, a World Cup playoff against Mexico four years ago and even the 2010 World Cup, where they went out in the group stage without suffering a single defeat. Peru, meanwhile,...

Peru booked the final spot in the 2018 World Cup with a 2-0 win against New Zealand on Wednesday night in Lima.

The two teams had all to play for after the first leg in Wellington, New Zealand, ended 0-0 and the hosts came out firmly on the front foot.

Luis Advincula almost gave Peru, looking for their first World Cup finals appearance since 1982, a dream start, smashing a shot from 20 yards off the crossbar after cutting in from the right side.

Peru continued to push in front of a raucous crowd...
