Malaysia U23 get AFC, SEA Games boost with 2-0 win vs. Myanmar

Malaysia coach Ong Kim Swee
Ong Kim Swee's side will leave for Thailand next week with a spring in their step after Thursday's win.

Malaysia's Under-23 side received a confidence boost for two upcoming tournaments with a 2-0 victory over Myanmar U23 in a friendly at a soggy Shah Alam on Thursday night.

Goals in either half gave Datuk Ong Kim's side a well-deserved win against Gerd Zeise's visitors.

The result was achieved despite a disrupted build up, with clubs reluctant to release their players, due to ongoing Malaysia Super League and Malaysia Cup commitments.

Thursday's team was missing key starters from three MSL outfits...

Malaysia U23 boss Ong says poor preparation 'not what we wanted'

Jason Dasey talks with Malaysia U22 manager Ong Kim Swee following his side's return from China.
Malaysia coaches Ong Kim Swee and Brad Maloney
Ong Kim Swee and Brad Maloney are preparing Malaysia for Thursday's friendly against Myanmar at Shah Alam Stadium.

Coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee admits Malaysia's disrupted build up to next week's 2018 AFC U23 qualifiers in Bangkok is "not what we wanted", with the Southeast Asia (SEA) Games now only a month away.

Ong was caught in the middle of a club versus country tug-of-war as he struggled to get enough players for centralised training at Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) headquarters. At one stage, only two of the 26-man squad were present, from the initial six who showed up on the first day of training.

Fortunately,...
