The kids are alright: U-16 stars promise India bright future

India were pitted against Jordan, Tajikistan and Serbia in the Four-Nation Invitational Tournament

There's a pause when India's U-16 coach Bibiano Fernandes is asked if he expected his team to win the Four-Nation Invitational Tournament in Serbia over the weekend, one that pitted India against Jordan, Tajikistan and the hosts.

"Looking at the teams, I didn't expect us to win," Bibiano says. "But I knew we would do well in Serbia. Everything was so well organised in our pre-tournament camp in Goa, and then we played in Spain against USA, Norway and the U-16 team of Valencia -- they were all good...

Uvena Fernandes - at home in the pacy, man's world of football

In 2016, Uvena Fernandes became the first Indian woman assistant referee to officiate in a World Cup -- the U-17 Women's World Cup in Jordan.
In 2016, Uvena Fernandes became the first Indian woman assistant referee to officiate in a World Cup -- the U-17 Women's World Cup in Jordan.

At Uvena Fernandes' job, it's commonplace to be called names, mocked, reviled and even attacked. She laughs and counts herself lucky for not having had to deal with any of it to a grave degree and also being spared of the 'get back into the kitchen' or 'go do the dishes' sexist jabs in her decade-and-a-half career so far.

In the fast-paced, testosterone-soaked world of football, female referees are at best seen an aberration. But Uvena has never felt out of place. "As long as you know your job and...

Five surprise picks in India's probables for four-nation tournament

What do two near-rookies, one Spain-trained striker from Kerala, one of the best performers in domestic football over the past season, and a goalkeeper who has effectively just had 172 minutes of competitive football have in common?

They are five of the left-of-field picks by India coach Stephen Constantine, who announced a 30-member squad of probables for the four-nation international tournament -- featuring hosts India, Kenya, New Zealand and Chinese Taipei -- that Mumbai is likely to host in June,...

Chhetri warns India against Asian Cup complacency

Chhetri believes that India's ranking will not have much of a bearing during the Asian Cup in Dubai

At the draw ceremony for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, India's captain Sunil Chhetri appeared to have picked the best group possible for his team.

After all, India's opponents, alongside hosts UAE, are two sides - Thailand and Bahrain - placed below them in the FIFA rankings. It seemed like the latest bit of positive news, as Indian football appears to be in a good place at the moment. The country is inside the top 100 of the world rankings and only recently saw a 13-match unbeaten streak end.

Chhetri,...

Renedy: I don't think India could have got a better draw

Former India football player Renedy Singh had a brief chat with Indian captain Sunil Chhettri ahead of the draw ceremony for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup. "I just reminded him what an honour it was for an Indian captain to be part of the occasion," says Renedy of the ceremony in which Chhetri selected the ball that determined the group India would feature in. "I also wished him good luck, so that we get a good group.

Those wishes certainly seem to have helped. India were drawn alongside Thailand, Bahrain...
