Afcon qualifying: Lesser lights take centre stage on final weekend

When the Confederation of African Football ratified an expansion to the Africa Cup of Nations in July 2017, introducing eight more teams to the biennial competition, the dynamic of the qualifying program was always going to change.

As had been the case ahead of the European Championship in 2016, for which UEFA had instigated an increase from 16 to 24 teams, many of the continent's heavyweights cruised to the tournament with games to spare.

However, an overall decrease in drama among the bigger nations...

Africa Cup of Nations qualification: What's still at stake?

The road to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations has been paved with troubles, with the tournament often appearing to be at the mercy of the Confederation of African Football's internal politics and, notably, the regime change from Issa Hayatou to Ahmad Ahmad in March 2017.

The change in CAF presidency prompted the Afcon changes instigated at the CAF symposium in July 2017, where it was decided that the tournament would be expanded from 16 to 24 teams, even though the 2019 qualifying campaign had already...

USM Alger officials unconcerned by Saddam Hussein chants

Officials of Algerian club USM Alger have played down chants from the side's fans about Saddam Hussein at a match over the weekend that prompted a political crisis.

The Iraqi Air Force side, Nadi Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya Al-Riyadhi, abandoned the Arab Club Champions Cup quarterfinal against USMA at Omar Hamadi Stadium in Algiers on Sunday, walking off the pitch with 18 minutes to play, after the home sides' fans repeatedly chanted the name of the late Iraqi leader and reportedly also delivered anti-Shiite...

Rachid Ghezzal made Premier League history on Saturday when he netted his first Premier League goal in Leicester City's 2-1 home defeat by Liverpool.

The 26-year-old's 63rd-minute strike, following an error by Reds stopper Alisson, wasn't able to turn the tide of the contest following opening goals from Sadio Made and Roberto Firmino.

However, Ghezzal's goal saw Leicester become the first team in the history of the Premier League to have had three Algerian players score for them in the tournament.

Algeria announce Djamel Belmadi as new national coach

Algeria have appointed former international Djamel Belmadi as their new national coach, the country's football federation announced on Thursday.

The former Manchester City midfielder will travel to Algiers to sign a contract replacing Rabah Madjer, who resigned in June, the Algerian Football Federation said.

French-born Belmadi, 42, played for Algeria between 2000 and 2004, including a quarter-final place at the 2004 African Nations Cup finals.

His club career started at Paris St Germain and included...
