Brad Friedel agrees to deal as coach of New England Revolution - sources

Brad Friedel has agreed to become the next coach of the New England Revolution, sources say.

Former United States goalkeeper Brad Friedel has agreed to a contract to become the new coach of the New England Revolution, multiple sources have told ESPN's Taylor Twellman.

Friedel, 46, should sign the deal "within the day," a Revolution source said. He will replace Jay Heaps, who was fired in September.

New England will be Friedel's first job managing a club after he retired with Tottenham Hotspur following the 2014-15 Premier League season.

Since then, he has coached the U.S. under-19 team and worked as a television analyst for Fox Sports.

As a player, Friedel won 82 caps for the United States, appearing at three World Cups. His only previous MLS experience came in a season and a half with the Columbus Crew in 1996-97. He then moved to England, where he holds the record for consecutive starts in the Premier League at 310 over eight years.

New England finished seventh in the Eastern Conference this season and missed the playoffs for the second straight year.

Goal.com reported earlier on Tuesday that the Revs had hired Friedel, after Twellman said on Monday that he was the leading candidate for the job.
