Portugal earn rare win over Italy; Poland and Greece play to draw in friendlies

Portugal defeated Italy for the first time in 39 years on Tuesday.

Portugal defeated Italy 1-0 in an international friendly on Tuesday to inflict Antonio Conte's first defeat as Azzurri coach.

With Cristiano Ronaldo unavailable, Eder netted his first goal for Portugal in the 52nd minute to help end a 39-year wait for a victory over Italy.

The result will be a blow to Italy's hopes of being seeded in the draw for 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

Italy had won five of its previous nine matches since Conte replaced Cesare Prandelli as coach after last year's World Cup, drawing the other four.

Greece managed a goalless draw against Poland in the farewell match for Costas Katsouranis, who earned 116 caps in his career.

The draw is a marked improvement for Greece, who fell to the Faroe Islands in Euro qualifying last week.

Jordan defeated Trinidad and Tobago 3-0 on the same day they hired Paul Put to coach the national team for one year.

Striker Hamza Ali Khaled Al Daradreh scored a brace around a goal from Abdallah Deeb to lift the hosts.

Put, who will begin in July, was banned in Belgium for three years, until 2011, after the club he coached, Lierse, was implicated in fixing games in the Belgian league of 2004-05.

Put has been adamant he was a scapegoat. He hasn't denied fixing took place at Lierse, but has said he wasn't in control of it.

South Africa rallied for a 2-1 win over Angola, Thamsanqa Gabuza and Ayanda Patosi scoring for the hosts after Alexander Cristovao gave Angola an early lead.
