Porto president in search of goalkeeper amid doubt of Casillas return

Iker Casillas is a doubt to return to Porto next season after suffering a heart attack at the beginning of May.

FC Porto president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa does not expect Iker Casillas to play again following the goalkeeper's heart attack and is in the market for a replacement.

Casillas spent five days in hospital after suffering a heart attack during training on May 1 and upon being discharged, the 37-year-old did not give an indication as to whether he would like or be able to return to play professionally again.

- When does the transfer window close?

"We have an extra problem with Casillas, with whom we had extended his contract and hence, we wouldn't have needed a goalkeeper," Pinto da Costa told Ojogo newspaper. "Now we think that we will need one, so we are also looking at that situation."

Casillas made 31 league appearances for FC Porto this season. He had signed a new contract with the Portuguese giants that runs until June 2020, with an optional second year.

He said at the time of signing that his wish was to end his career at the Dragao Stadium.

Porto team doctor Nelson Pulga said at the time he expected Casillas to make a full recovery but claimed it was too early to make an assessment on whether the veteran goalkeeper would return to play.

Casillas joined Porto in the summer of 2015 on a free transfer after 16 years at Real Madrid.

He helped Los Blancos win five La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues. He was also captain of the Spain squad that won two successive European Championships, in 2008 and 2012, and the World Cup in 2010.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas is a reported target of FC Porto. Navas was recently notified by Madrid that he will not be first-choice goalkeeper next season, with coach Zinedine Zidane opting for Thibaut Courtois.

Navas' wages could be a stumbling block in any potential move to a new club.
