Newcastle Jets sign Matthew Ridenton from Wellington Phoenix

The Socceroos coach has selected Andrew Nabbout and Dimi Petratos in his preliminary squad to travel to training camp in Turkey.

Midfielder Matthew Ridenton will come back under the A-League tutelage of Ernie Merrick after leaving the Wellington Phoenix for the Newcastle Jets.

In a blow for the Kiwi-based club, Ridenton signed a two-year deal with Merrick's Jets, who finished runner-up this season.

The 22-year-old All White enjoyed a breakthrough 2017-18 season, playing all but one game for the Phoenix and consistently being among the better performers at the struggling club.

Box-to-box midfielder Ridenton has scored four...

Speculation over Wellington Phoenix's future 'not appropriate' - chairman

Wellington Phoenix chairman Rob Morrison has said recent media reports that the club's A-League licence is up for sale are off the mark.

Although he did not flatly refute the speculation which claims the failing Phoenix have held discussions with at least two of the expansion candidates -- Southern Expansion (based in Sydney's south and South Coast regions) and a South West Sydney bid.

Wellington's licence with Football Federation Australia expires at the end of the 2019-20 season.

A Sarpreet Singh gave Wellington Phoenix hope of avoiding the A-League wooden spoon and dented the confidence of Melbourne City on the eve of the finals.

The 19-year-old showed why he's a bright light in an otherwise dismal year for the Phoenix in their 2-1 victory on Saturday night, breaking a 1-1 half time stalemate with a strike that took a deflection past City keeper Dean Bouzanis.

Caretaker coach Chris Greenacre was ecstatic his team weathered City's early pressure and fought back to show fans...

Phoenix were 'lacking a lot of confidence' under Kalezic - Greenacre

Wellington Phoenix caretaker coach Chris Greenacre has lifted the lid on the despondency that enveloped the club before predecessor Darije Kalezic departed.

Greenacre made it his mission to inject some enjoyment into the closing weeks of a forgettable A-League campaign, and it was nearly enough to upset the Melbourne Victory in their penultimate game.

The last-placed Phoenix led 1-0 in Melbourne on Sunday before the fourth-placed Victory conjured two late goals.

Greenacre has overseen three losses...

Super-sub "King" Kenny Athiu has steered Melbourne Victory to a 2-1 victory over Wellington to help secure an A-League home elimination final.

With just one round to play, fifth-placed Adelaide (36 points) can't catch Victory (41 points) after they failed to upset ladder-leaders Sydney FC in the late Sunday night game.

Melbourne looked as if they would come away empty-handed against the last-placed Phoenix before their two late goals, with Athiu in the thick of the action after he replaced star Besart...
