Atletico Madrid are still undefeated and in fourth place in La Liga after notching their fifth draw, a disappointing 1-1 result at home versus Villarreal.

Argentina forward Angel Correa scored his fourth league goal at the hour mark to put the hosts in front. But Atletico were unable to hold the lead, allowing Villarreal to draw level with 10 minutes left through a clean header by Carlos Bacca.

MADRID -- Atletico Madrid could only manage a 1-1 draw at third-division club Elche as Spain's leading clubs struggled in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday.

Without several regular starters, Atletico Madrid never found their rhythm against Elche in southeastern Spain.

Thomas Partey put the visitors ahead with a header in the 17th minute, but Elche equalised with a penalty converted by Lolo Pla in the 52nd after he was brought down inside the area by defender Lucas Hernandez.

Fran Escriba was dismissed by Villarreal earlier on Monday.

Villarreal have promoted Javi Calleja as their new head coach following the sacking of Fran Escriba on Monday.

A former Villarreal player, Calleja had been in charge of the club's reserve side this season, where they have gone unbeaten after six rounds in Spain's third tier.

Calleja has replaced Escriba, who was sacked just six games into the season following Villarreal's 4-0 defeat at Getafe on Sunday, leaving the club 14th in La Liga with seven points after their third loss of the campaign.
