Portland Timbers reacquire Jorge Villafana from Santos Laguna

The Portland Timbers are climbing up the Western Conference as they match a club record of 15-straight unbeaten games.

The Portland Timbers have announced that they reacquired U.S. international defender Jorge Villafana from Liga MX side Santos Laguna.

MLSSoccer.com was the first to report the move.

Portland sent $175,000 of targeted and general allocation money to the LA Galaxy in exchange for the top spot in the allocation order to make the move. Villafana was subject to the allocation order due to the fact that the Timbers received a transfer fee greater than $500,000 when the defender was sent to Santos after...

Pele: Clubs in Europe, Japan and Mexico wanted me after retirement

Pele was carried off the field following his final match as a player.

Brazil legend Pele has revealed he received offers from Europe, Japan and Mexico following his 1977 retirement with the New York Cosmos, but he decided "to retire on top."

Oct. 1 marked the 40th anniversary of Pele's retirement from football. He spent his last three years in activity with the Cosmos of the North American Soccer League after being lured from Santos, the only club he'd played for in his career.

On that date, Pele scored and played for both sides in a friendly between the Cosmos and...

Farewell to The King: When Pele played his last game 40 years ago

Forty years ago, New York and the sporting world bid goodbye "to a king."

To hear Shep Messing -- now the lead analyst for the New York Red Bulls, but then a 27-year-old goalkeeper for the New York Cosmos -- describe Pele's final game, this was not just the grand finale of a star athlete but that of a global icon, a statesman, almost a religious figure.

A friendly between the Cosmos, Pele's last team, and Santos FC, the Brazilian futbol club for which he had become a legend, Pele's final game on...

PSG will pay Santos €9m in solidarity money from Neymar transfer - chief

Santos president Modesto Roma Junior has confirmed that Paris Saint-Germain will pay the Brazilian club nearly €9 million in solidarity money after Neymar's €222m summer move from Barcelona.

The Brazilian superstar, who started his career with Santos, has scored four goals and provided four assists for PSG from four Ligue 1 appearances so far this season, and the 25-year-old notched his first strike and laid on another on his Champions League debut for the French club away at Celtic...

San Lorenzo, Botafogo, Santos move into Copa Libertadores quarterfinals

San Lorenzo goalkeeper Nicolas Gaston Navarro stops a penalty kick on Thursday to help his club advance.

The possibility of an all Argentina-Brazil last eight of the Copa Libertadores was avoided on Wednesday, when two Brazilian teams fell to Jorge Wilstermann of Bolivia and Barcelona of Ecuador, respectively. Then, on Thursday, Barcelona's local rivals from the city of Guayaquil, Emelec, came very close to springing a third surprise.

Emelec had gone down 1-0 at home to San Lorenzo of Argentina in last month's first leg. But in Buenos Aires they won by the same scoreline, taking the tie to a shootout....
