Franco Armani, Juan Quintero bring World Cup intrigue to River Plate

Keeper Franco Armani, a favorite at Atletico Nacional before arriving at River Plate, could get a look from Argentina's World Cup side.

Nearly 70 years ago, the great Alfredo Di Stefano left Buenos Aires giants River Plate and headed north to Colombia to play for Millonarios of Bogota. It was an important stage of a career that then took him to Real Madrid, where, as the European Cup (now Champions League) was launched, he became perhaps the most influential player European club football has ever seen. Now Colombia is returning the favour. Two of the most intriguing imports to Argentine football this year are a couple of River Plate...

Javier Mascherano wants River Plate return, doesn't want to make promises

ESPN FC's La Liga expert Sid Lowe assesses Barcelona's start to the season and the reasons behind Luis Suarez's struggles.

Barcelona's Javier Mascherano wants to return to River Plate before his playing days are over but is wary of making a promise he cannot keep.

Gallardo's side took a 1-0 first-leg lead into Tuesday's encounter at Lanus and had a 2-0 advantage on the night after 23 minutes played.

River could have extended their lead had they been awarded a 40th-minute penalty. River's Ignacio Scocco cut inside the rival's area and the ball came off Ivan Marcone's...

Lanus completes stunning comeback to beat River, reach Libertadores final

River Plate scored twice to go ahead 3-0 on aggregate before Lanus roared back to prevail.

At the weekend River Plate and Lanus fielded reserve sides in their Argentine league games. Both lost 4-0, but they were happy to keep their stars fresh for this crunch meeting in the Copa Libertadores, South America's version of the Champions League. And what a night it turned out to be.

In last Tuesday's first semifinal leg, River Plate won by the only goal. Their victory was twofold. First, the obvious -- they were ahead at the halfway stage. Second, they had denied Lanus an away goal. Coach...
