Northampton Town gave their survival hopes a huge boost with a richly deserved 2-0 victory over promotion-chasing Plymouth Argyle.

Goals either side of half-time were enough to hand the Cobblers only a second win in 12 games and bring them to within two points of safety, denting Plymouth's hopes of a play-off place.

Northampton took the game to their in-form visitors from the first whistle and should have had the lead when Sam Hoskins capitalised on a mistake from Gary Sawyer before shooting straight...

Plymouth slipped to sixth as they survived late drama to claim a goalless draw against close play-off rivals Portsmouth.

Pompey winger Jamal Lowe rounded Argyle stand-in keeper Kyle Letheren in the last minute of normal time but his shot was cleared off the line by Plymouth's on-loan Bristol City central defender Zak Vyner.

Seconds later Portsmouth skipper Brett Pitman's powerful stoppage-time header crashed off the face of the bar.

That was as close as either side came to scoring in an engrossing encounter...

Plymouth playmaker Graham Carey tucked away a stoppage-time penalty winner as Argyle came back from 1-0 down to beat League One play-off rivals Peterborough United 2-1 at Home Park.

The Posh went ahead when the league's leading scorer Jack Marriott took his tally to 26 goals with a superb 10th-minute finish as he pounced on a bouncing through ball to lob stand-in goalkeeper Kyle Letheren.

Argyle's best move of the first half resulted in their leveller.

The greens swept the ball down the left wing and...

Scunthorpe interim manager Nick Daws will check on the fitness of Jordan Clarke ahead of the clash with Plymouth.

Clarke was replaced after 72 minutes against Oxford in his first start since a hamstring problem.

Daws told the club's official website: "We took Jordan off because we knew we would get 60 minutes from Jordan at best. He's probably got through a little bit on adrenaline, and the advice was we needed to take him off."

Plymouth moved back into League One's top six with a comprehensive 4-0 win over mid-table Southend thanks to two goals apiece from Ruben Lameiras and Graham Carey.

Lameiras opened the scoring, finishing off a brilliant passing move by steering a low shot past United keeper Mark Oxley after being teed up by target man Ryan Taylor.

Simon Cox missed a golden opportunity to level when Argyle keeper Remi Matthews could only parry Dru Yearwood's thumping 30-yard drive into his path.

Southend would rue that...
