NASL holdovers Cosmos, Miami FC, Armada cleared for U.S. Open Cup

Sporting Kansas City rightfully celebrate their fourth Open Cup triumph with a raucous display in front of their home fans.

The New York Cosmos, Miami FC and Jacksonville Armada will be allowed to field teams in the U.S. Open Cup this year after the U.S. Soccer Federation changed course on Friday.

The decision was taken by the USSF's Open Cup Committee, and the three teams will have until Monday, April 2, at 4 p.m. ET to confirm their participation.

The clubs are still members of the North American Soccer League, but the NASL is currently on hiatus having canceled the 2018 season after its application for a Division II...

Orlando signs NASL MVP Stefano Pinho, trades for R.J. Allen

The ESPN FC crew reflect on Kaka's career as the Brazilian announced his retirement on Sunday.

Orlando City signed Miami FC striker Stefano Pinho, the reigning NASL most valuable player, on a busy Monday for the Lions.

Pinho, 26, scored 17 goals in 27 league games this year, winning both the Golden Boot as top scorer and Golden Ball as MVP for the second time in three years.

The Brazilian made his greatest impression on Orlando when he scored a hat trick to beat the Lions 3-1 in the U.S. Open Cup in June.

He will help fill the attacking void left by his countryman Kaka, who was out of...

Miami FC taking promotion-relegation fight to Court of Arbitration for Sport

Miami FC is taking its battle to require the U.S. Soccer Federation to introduce promotion and relegation to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The club won this year's spring season title in the NASL, designated by the USSF as a second-tier league, though it has no hope of being promoted to the top flight because Major League Soccer does not use a system of promotion and relegation common in most global football leagues.

And together with fourth-tier club Kingston Stockade FC, Miami FC said...

FC Cincinnati is on to the semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup after beating Miami FC 1-0 in a match that was rescheduled from July due to torrential rains in Florida.

Djiby Fall turned in the only goal of the match, poking home from close range in the 68th minute from a Justin Hoyle assist to give his team the 1-0 lead.

The visitors advance to face the New York Red Bulls in the last four to become the first non-MLS semifinalist since the 2011 Richmond Kickers.

MLS rejected $4 billion media rights deal requiring promotion/relegation

Major League Soccer rejected a $4 billion global media rights deal from international media company MP & Silva, as reported by the Sports Business Journal.

The offer, which would have quadrupled the annual rate of MLS' current deal, came with the significant contingency that MLS would have to institute a system of promotion and relegation.

The proposed deal would have run for 10 years starting in 2023, after the current deal with ESPN, Fox and Univision expires.

Those broadcasters have "exclusive...
