Melbourne City improvised their way to another A-League win, beating battlers Brisbane Roar 1-0.

In the absence of sidelined striker Bruno Fornaroli, marquee full-back Ritchie de Laet led the line for City at AAMI Park, scoring the only goal of the game.

De Laet got in front of marker Jack Hingert and swept in Rostyn Griffiths' cross on 52 minutes to give Warren Joyce's side their third straight win in 2019.

The triumph lifts City to 23 points, equal with Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC.

Melbourne City came from a goal down to topple the fatigued Newcastle Jets at AAMI stadium.

Newcastle marquee player Ronald Vargas was sent off in controversial circumstances as Melbourne City consigned the Jets to more A-League pain at AAMI Park.

The red card midway through Sunday evening's first half set the course for an action-packed 2-1 City victory, the hosts recovering after goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic's nightmare start left them trailing in the opening minutes.

Riley McGree converted from the penalty spot in the 25th minute when a Luke Brattan corner deflected off Vargas's arm.

New Sydney FC signing Anthony Caceres speaks on why the Sky Blues are a perfect fit for him.

Sydney FC have made their first move of the January transfer window by recruiting Manchester City's Anthony Caceres for the rest of the A-League season.

Caceres made 63 appearances for Central Coast when he was sold to the Premier League heavyweight in 2016 before being loaned out to sister club Melbourne City twice.

He had made five appearances for Warren Joyce's side this campaign -- four of them off the bench -- but his loan ended on New Year's Day and the Sky Blues snapped him up.

Western Sydney's disappointing A-League season reached a new low after the Wanderers were booed by their own fans in a 2-0 loss to a 10-man Melbourne City.

Lachlan Wales and Ritchie De Laet set up the New Year's Day win with goals within two minutes of each other in the first half at ANZ Stadium.

The Wanderers, who have now lost three on the trot at the Olympic site for the first time in club history, were given a chorus of disapproval from the 8,365 fans at both half-time and the final whistle.
