Club America's impressive win at Tigres was the highlight of the weekend in Liga MX.
Club America's impressive win at Tigres was the highlight of the weekend in Liga MX.

MEXICO CITY -- The schedule makers for Liga MX graced us a fabulous tripleheader this weekend that had two Mexico City teams (Cruz Azul, Club America) face the two Monterrey squads (Rayados, Tigres) and Chivas host Pumas. The trio of matches headlined an exciting weekend in Mexican soccer in which 27 goals were scored across the entire league. Here's what we learned in Week 12:

1. "Chilangos" dominate "regios" in stellar fashion

Much was made of what this weekend represented in the supposed...

Liga MX playoff race hits crunch time with four teams vying for one spot

Things are beginning to tighten up in the Liga MX race for a playoff position in the top eight of the table. With only six match days left until the Liguilla, four teams are currently sitting at the middle of the league table with 15 points apiece: Pachuca, Chivas, Queretaro and Club Tijuana.

In order to stay alive in the playoff hunt, there will be little to no room for mistakes from the aforementioned squads who still have much to prove. With only goal differential narrowly separating them, let's...

Chivas' Raul Gudino impresses in Clasico but America still the better club

Chivas tied 1-1 against Club America in Estadio Azteca on Sunday and celebrated the point as if it was a victory.

"When you are hungry, a tortilla with salt on it tastes glorious," was the barb one Mexican commentator aimed at Chivas for cheering the draw in Liga MX's Clasico Nacional.

Club America was left with a bitter taste when Guadalajara's goalkeeper Raul Gudino saved a last-gasp penalty from Colombian Mateus Uribe, just as it looked as if Las Aguilas' late pressure was going to pay off.

The...

Super Clasico between Club America-Chivas always comes with higher stakes, subplots galore

There is never any love lost when Club America and Chivas meet, as this shoving match from 2016 clearly shows.
There is never any love lost when Club America and Chivas meet, as this shoving match from 2016 clearly shows.

MEXICO - Two hundred and twenty-six matches are sandwiched between Club America's 2-1 win over Guadalajara in the 1943 Copa Mexico and the two sides' 1-1 draw last March as part of the Clausura 2018.

In that span, the match has risen from an afterthought to a powerhouse, rising from Mexico's top rivalry to one of the richest and most exciting pairings the entire sport has to offer. Unbelievably, the two teams have decided only one league championship (1983-84) in direct confrontation. Despite this,...

Veterans Oribe Peralta, Jair Pereira headline Chivas and America's combined best XI

America's Oribe Peralta and Chivas' Jair Pereira will do battle again in Sunday's Clasico Nacional.
America's Oribe Peralta and Chivas' Jair Pereira will do battle again in Sunday's Clasico Nacional.

If Chivas and Club America were somehow allowed to merge their rosters, what would a "superteam" from both sides look like? After analyzing each player from either squad, here is the best XI from the two sides that are set to face this Sunday at the Clasico Nacional.

Goalkeeper: Agustin Marchesin (Club America)

This one was fairly easy. In comparison to Chivas starter Raul Gudino, Marchesin has had more shutouts, saves and an overall better season. On paper, the 30-year-old Argentine is far...

Liga MX Power Rankings: Cruz Azul stays hot; Chivas, Morelia lay eggs

MEXICO CITY -- As Liga MX breaks for the first FIFA international dates of the budding season, we can mark an informal midpoint to the season with eight games down and nine to go in the Apertura 2018 campaign.

While one team sits head and shoulders above the rest in Cruz Azul, another (Atlas) has still not won a game and just fired its manager after an offensive output of one goal in the first eight matches. Even then, all 18 teams still possess a mathematical chance to make the playoffs --...
