The 19-year-old is reported to have cost £10 million, and is expected to head out on loan to City's sister club Girona in Spain.

Neglected Maracana and fan violence reveal Brazil's dark underbelly

Maracana wide view Rio
The Maracana is one of world football's most storied venues. But it's not being treated as such.

On Wednesday, Fluminense host Rio de Janeiro rivals Botafogo in the city's giant Maracana stadium. It is the 20th game the ground has staged this year -- and no one knows when the next one will be.

One of football's most iconic venues, the Maracana was built for the 1950 World Cup, and expensively rebuilt for the same tournament in 2014. It has since been handed over to a private consortium to administer. They are desperate to get out. Changes to the terms of the contract, they...

Vasco da Gama can avoid relegation with attack-minded boss Jorginho

Jorginho is Vasco's third coach this campaign and he may just pull off a relegation miracle before the season is done.

Last Wednesday night, 3-0 down from the first leg, Vasco da Gama fielded a reserve side for their Brazilian Cup quarterfinal tie against Sao Paulo.

Supporters of rival Rio de Janeiro clubs enjoyed themselves. There was a joke going round. "Vasco's game tonight is going to be cancelled," I was informed by a fan of Fluminense. "They won't be able to put a side out. How can they field a reserve team when they don't even have a first team?"

The joke has lost a bit of its traction in the last couple...
