FC Cincinnati selects UCLA's Frankie Amaya with top pick in MLS SuperDraft

Frankie Amaya is the youngest player in this year's draft.

Expansion side FC Cincinnati selected UCLA midfielder Frankie Amaya No. 1 overall in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft on Friday.

"This is what I worked my whole life for," Amaya told MLSSoccer.com at the draft in Chicago. "This is a crazy moment."

Amaya, 18, is the youngest player in the draft, but his upside is such that he's expected to adapt well to the professional game, even in a central playmaking role that is usually the domain of foreign players.

Chicago Fire re-sign manager Veljko Paunovic to multi-year deal

Veljko Paunovic led the Fire to the playoffs in 2017.

The Chicago Fire have re-signed manager Veljko Paunovic to a multi-year contract extension, the club announced on Thursday.

Paunovic, 41, signed a two-year deal with a club option for a third.

"We believe the foundation we are setting and the standards we are demanding are the right ones in developing our championship program," said Chicago Fire president Nelson Rodriguez.

The Seattle Sounders acquired defender Jonathan Campbell from the Chicago Fire for a fourth-round pick in the 2020 draft, both teams announced.

Campbell, 25, had one goal and two assists in 72 games (49 starts) over the past three seasons for the Fire. He had one assist in 15 matches (11 starts) in 2018.

Marcelo dos Santos Ferreira has made the move to MLS.

The Chicago Fire acquired centre-back Marcelo dos Santos Ferreira from Portuguese first-division club Sporting CP, the Major League Soccer team announced on Thursday.

Marcelo is under contract for the 2019 and 2020 MLS seasons and will be added to the Fire's roster pending the completion of a physical and receipt of his international transfer certificate.

The Fire did not announce the transfer fee.

Bastian Schweinsteiger has spent the past two seasons in Chicago.

Bastian Schweinsteiger has signed a one-year contract to remain with the Chicago Fire, the club announced on Wednesday.

Schweinsteiger, 34, has spent the past two seasons with Chicago, making 61 league and cup appearances and scoring seven goals.

While financial details were not disclosed, he will remain a Designated Player in 2019.
