Central Coast Mariners are their own 'worst enemy' - Paul Okon

Paul Okon
Paul Okon's Central Coast Mariners have led six out of seven games, but have only won one.

Fast-starting but lowly positioned A-League club Central Coast are sometimes their own worst enemy, according to coach Paul Okon.

But he would still rather they had a lead to relinquish than chase games from behind.

Heading into Saturday's away match against Wellington Phoenix, the ninth-placed Mariners have led in all six of their seven games in which there's been a goal, but have won only once.

"I think it's a combination of many things," Okon said on Thursday.

"It's certainly not a lack of desire....

Adelaide United ended a three-match losing streak and gained a confidence boost for the FFA Cup final with a last-gasp 2-1 A-League win over Central Coast.

Ryan Kitto fired home from the edge of the area in the 93rd minute on Thursday night to halt the Mariners' three-game unbeaten run.

The Mariners led at halftime in Gosford through a 40th-minute Wout Brama penalty after Baba Diawara shoved Connor Pain.

Andrew Hoole delighted with Central Coast's surprise win over Sydney

Australia defender Bailey Wright's on-plane interview was rudely disrupted by a teammate throwing a pillow at him.

Blasting Daryl Braithwaite's "The Horses" in the sheds is an Australian sporting tradition usually reserved for grand final celebrations.

Not a team's first win of the home-and-away season in round six.

But the Central Coast Mariners are making no apologies for soaking up their A-League breakthrough against Sydney FC last week, and are confident it's just a hint of what's to come this season.

Central Coast scored a major upset over Sydney FC, winning 2-0 at home to inflict the first defeat on the reigning champions in nine months.

The match was supposed to be a routine 90 minutes for Graham Arnold's men, but the Mariners used pace and intensity to neutralise their opponets, with Andrew Hoole and Jake McGing scoring to seal the former Mariners coach's first loss at Central Coast Stadium since departing in 2013.

"We worked hard and the Mariners were red-hot tonight," Arnold said.

"You've...

Brisbane and Central Coast are still searching for their first A-League wins of the season after fighting out a dour 0-0 draw on Sunday.

Both sides had their chances but neither was able to take them in the first scoreless stalemate of the new season at Suncorp Stadium.

But it wasn't without controversy, with both sides having reasonable penalty claims turned down by referee Daniel Elder.

Massimo Maccarone appeared to have been brought down by goalkeeper Ben Kennedy in the 32nd minute as he chased...
