Manchester United look to hang onto David De Gea, thwart Real Madrid

Talk of David De Gea moving to Madrid has gone on for years, but United might be about to end it.

Deadline day has come and gone, and all the latest deals and potential deals can be found here, but there's plenty brewing in the market as clubs begin to look toward January.

United to scare off Madrid with De Gea extension

Manchester United are set to offer David De Gea a new contract to ward off interest from longtime admirers Real Madrid, according to The Independent.

Madrid infamously failed to sign De Gea two years ago -- reportedly due to a dodgy fax machine -- but continue to be linked with a move for the Spain international.

That has not been lost on United, who are determined to tie their goalkeeper down to a new deal, given that his current one is set to expire in 2019.

Jose Mourinho does not want to risk losing his No. 1 and is keen to get him to sign an extension by the start of the new year.

Everton's failed Costa bid

So Diego Costa is back at Atletico Madrid -- but he could well have been joining Everton, instead, if Ronald Koeman had his way.

The Daily Mirror claims Everton were willing to pay £70 million to sign the Spain international from Chelsea, before his return to Atletico was agreed last week.

Koeman's side apparently had made it clear to the Premier League champions that they were prepared to stump up the cash, only for Costa to insist on a move back to his former club.

Having also reportedly failed in a summer move to sign Olivier Giroud from Arsenal after losing Romelu Lukaku, Everton now will turn their attention to a January swoop for Benfica striker Raul Jimenez, the Daily Mirror adds.

Sterling in line for new City deal

Manchester City are to show their faith in Raheem Sterling by offering him a new contract, says the Daily Star.

Sterling still has three years remaining on his current £200,000-a-week deal at the Etihad Stadium, but City see him as a key part of their future plans and so are ready to offer him fresh terms.

Arsenal were linked with a move for the England international over the summer. They reportedly are due to reignite their interest in January, with City looking to scare off the North London club with the extension.

Along with Sterling, City also are currently working on new contracts for Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and Gabriel Jesus.

- Arsenal are set to fight it out with Nice, Bordeaux and RB Leipzig for Le Havre's 19-year-old defender Harold Moukoudi, the Sun reports. With Per Mertesacker due to retire at the end of the season, Arsenal are looking to improve their defensive options and are keen admirers of the France youth international.

- According to a leaked document from Der Spiegel, Paris Saint-Germain are paying Neymar £600,000 a week following his record move from Barcelona in the summer. The Ligue 1 side apparently will pay Barcelona up to £214m for the Brazil international over his five-year contract.

- AS reports that Real Madrid this week will extend Marco Asensio's contract to June 2023 and insert a €500m buyout clause into the deal. Madrid will announce the news after their Champions League group-stage clash with Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.
