Cornthwaite's Wanderers exit more about money than coach - Bridge

Western Sydney defender Robbie Cornthwaite
Robbie Cornthwaite has left Western Sydney Wanderers to join Malaysian side Perak TBG.

Robbie Cornthwaite's departure from Western Sydney had more to do with the riches of Asian football than his relationship with coach Josep Gombau, according to Mark Bridge.

Wanderers striker Bridge has lamented the loss of his "great captain" Cornthwaite, who joins Malaysian side Perak TBG having been benched for multiple A-League games this season by Gombau.

Cornthwaite was rumoured to have been unhappy under Gombau's regime but has denied his exit was over a fallout with the coach, who he said...

Jason Dasey and Kaz Patafta discuss where Tim Cahill may go to find regular football in order to be selected for Australia's 2018 World Cup squad.

Josep Gombau's Western Sydney Wanderers revolution has continued with captain Robert Cornthwaite released to join Malaysian side Perak TBG.

Cornthwaite was not in the Wanderers squad for their 1-1 draw against Wellington Phoenix at the weekend and was given permission to leave the country to finalise his move, after Gombau determined the central defender was not part of his plans.

The A-League club confirmed his departure on Tuesday.

"I would love to thank everyone involved at Western Sydney for...

Matija Ljujic promises more wonder goals for the Phoenix: 'I'll always shoot'

The Wellington Phoenix's Matija Ljujic saved the day with a huge out of the box strike to end the match 1-1 against the Western Sydney Wanderers.

Wellington Phoenix recruit Matija Ljujic says he'll always back himself to shoot from distance after scoring a thunderbolt and helping his A-League side rescue a point in Saturday's 1-1 draw with the Western Sydney Wanderers.

The 24-year-old playmaker wound up and let fly with his left foot in the second half of last week's draw, depositing the ball in the corner of the net.

His goal followed Brendon Santalab's Wanderers opener.

Freshly signed from Lithuanian outfit Zalgiris, Ljujic said he always...

Jacob Pepper & Andrew Nabbout
Jacob Pepper, left, battles for the ball with Newcastle's Andrew Nabbout.

Newcastle Jets coach Ernie Merrick is demanding action over an ugly tackle that has put his star recruit Pato Rodriguez in doubt for Saturday's A-League clash against Wellington.

Rodriguez was left nursing a bruised ankle and was unable to train on Monday after the two-footed challenge from Jacob Pepper early in the second half of Friday's 1-0 win over the Roar.

Pepper was not penalised but Merrick has personally flagged it with referees boss Ben Wilson, after claiming match officials admitted to...

Vietnam loss leaves Australia U23's on brink of Asian Championships exit

Trent Buhagiar
Australia's Trent Buhagiar reflects on the Olyroos' shock loss to Vietnam on Sunday.

Nguyen Quang Hai broke a 72-minute deadlock at Kunshan, China, on Sunday to lift the country above the Olyroos in Group D on goal difference.

After Thursday's winning start against Syria, Ante Milicic's side now sits third after two games and have it all to do against leaders Korea on Wednesday if they are to progress to the quarterfinals.

Australia dominated possession but Vietnam...
