Atletico Madrid target Champions League final after Super Cup win - president

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo said the club have set the goal this season of reaching the Champions League final, which will be held in their Wanda Metropolitano stadium.

They defeated local rivals Real Madrid 4-2 in the UEFA Super Cup in Tallinn, Estonia, on Wednesday, and Cerezo said after the game that he believes Atletico have what it takes to reach the final for the first time since 2016.

"Our objective is to improve this season, but it will be difficult," Cerezo told Movistar+. "And also to try and get to the final of the Champions League, which has resisted us a lot and will be played in our own stadium."

Cerezo said Atletico would not celebrate winning the Super Cup at the Neptuno fountain in Madrid's city centre, where they celebrate their titles, but "will give Neptuno a break and go again in May."

And Antoine Griezmann also said that winning the Champions League remains one of the club's goals this season.

"We have to show on the field that this is our year and we want to win the Champions League in our stadium," Griezmann said after the game.

Griezmann, who turned down Barcelona to sign a new contract with Atletico in June, said he was convinced to do so because of coach Diego Simeone's work at the club.

"I stayed because this is a great project," he said. "I have confidence in Simeone and I wasn't wrong [to renew]. ... I knew I want to stay because the club have made a great effort to bring in really good players."

Simeone, when asked about the Champions League goal, played down those expectations but did acknowledge Atletico needed to celebrate the victory.

"We have to enjoy today, without a doubt," Simeone said. "When we lose, we suffer, we cry, we get upset, we close ourselves off. Starting [Thursday], we will think about the league because it's going to be a very difficult season."

Meanwhile, Diego Costa, who scored twice, had an ongoing spat with Sergio Ramos throughout the game but assured that it was all in the name of winning.

"The whole world knows the admiration I have for Ramos," Costa said. "He has shown year after year how good he is. When I got into the Spain squad, he helped me. I have respect for him. But on the field, everyone fights for himself. I want to win and what happens on the field stays on the field."
