Matildas defeat China but miss out on spot in Algarve Cup final

The Matildas have claimed a deserved 2-0 win over China but the scoreline fell short of delivering an Algarve Cup final appearance.

Injury-hit Australia endured some unlucky moments and at times struggled to break down a compact China in their third and final group match.

In the end, Chloe Logarzo and Sam Kerr found the net to ensure Alen Stajcic's side finish top of Group A and set up a third-place playoff with host nation Portugal on Thursday.

Despite scoring eight goals against China over November's...

Alen Stajcic unfazed as Portugal ends Australia's historic winning streak

Algarve Cup hosts Portugal held Australia to a scoreless draw on Saturday.

Matildas coach Alen Stajcic is refusing to be downbeat despite the end of his team's historic winning run and a spate of injuries that threaten Australia's bid to reach next year's World Cup.

The Matildas' record eight-game winning streak came to an end against Portugal on Saturday (AEDT) with a 0-0 draw at the Algarve Cup.

The result was no great disgrace, even if it came against the lowest-ranked side Stajcic's side have faced in a year.

Australia could still reach the final of the friendly competition...

Matildas still have 'serious firepower' despite injury crisis - Sam Kerr

Sky Blues' Sam Kerr has continued her amazing goal streak, kicking her 16th goal of the season, equaling the single-season record set by Kim Little in 2014.

Striking powerhouse Sam Kerr says Australia's national women's football team is well-placed to cover key absences as they begin their run to the Asian Cup.

The high-flying Matildas return to international action this week at the Algarve Cup, a 12-nation friendly tournament in Portugal.

With only one more match -- a homecoming for Kerr in Perth against Thailand on March 26 -- before April's continental championships, the tournament is a crucial tune-up.

But there's no Caitlin Foord, no Kyah Simon...

Kyah Simon misses Matildas' Algarve Cup squad with hamstring injury

The Matildas will contest the Algarve Cup without star forward Kyah Simon, who's been ruled out with a hamstring injury sustained in the W-League Grand Final.

In a further blow to the Matildas' attacking might at the invitational tournament in Portugal, scan results determined Simon faces a lay-off of about three weeks after being forced off the field an hour into Melbourne City's 2-0 Grand Final win over Sydney FC on Sunday.

It's hoped the 26-year-old will be fit to re-join Alen Stajcic's squad...

Samantha Kerr, Matildas aiming to gain No. 1 ranking, respect from world

Sky Blues' Sam Kerr has continued her amazing goal streak, kicking her 16th goal of the season, equaling the single-season record set by Kim Little in 2014.

Australia's national women's soccer team has enjoyed quite the year, climbing from eighth to sixth on the FIFA World Rankings, with the expectation of cracking the top five once again when the new list is released in mid-December.

The Matildas posted a historic win over the U.S. as they claimed the Tournament of Nations title in July, and they put an exclamation mark on their year with a comprehensive 5-1 win over China in November that extended their winning run to seven matches. Despite that triumphant...
